Plantar fasciitis is an irritation of the thick band of connective tissue (plantar fascia) that travels across the bottom of the foot between the toes and the heel. The condition is the result of repetitive stress or excessive tension on the plantar fascia causing small tears in the tissue, making it irritated and inflamed. The pain, which develops gradually, feels like a stabbing sensation in the heel of the foot.
