Whiplash is a common neck injury that happens when the neck jerks back and forth quickly and violently, bending the spine past its normal range of motion. It is a common injury in vehicle accidents but can also be caused by the quick jerking of a rollercoaster ride or contact sports. Whiplash can be very painful, with neck pain and stiffness at the time of the injury, or it may begin days later. There may also be shoulder, back, and arm pain.
