Facet Joint Injections are both a diagnostic and a pain management procedure. A facet joint injection may help diagnose the source of a patient’s pain as well as relieve pain and inflammation. The facet joints, found on the back of the spine, can become irritated or inflamed and cause pain. The injection consists of an anesthetic to help provide immediate relief and a steroid that takes effect in a few days following the injection. The steroid helps reduce inflammation and pain. The injection can provide pain relief for up to several months. Up to three injections may be given over a period of 12 months.
